Blackville Celebrates Heritage Day
The Blackville Women’s Institute recently hosted an afternoon of stories and music to celebrate our heritage on February 16 at the Community Center. This year’s theme was War and Peace.
The afternoon began with a welcome from Women’s Institute president Lillian Brennan. Local residents Frank Myers and Roy MacRae kept the large group entertained by performing several war songs, telling stories and jokes, and sharing war memorabilia.
Joyce Fortune, who joined the Canadian Women Army Corp in 1944, shared her memories of enlisting in the service as a young girl. She spoke fondly as she recalled her experiences during that time.
Ella Curtis, who enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division in 1943, spoke of her training in Ontario and Quebec and told stories from that chapter of her life.
Frank Myers and Roy MacRae then entertained the crowd with more songs and a reception was held. Memories of Blackville was there to capture the day’s festivities as a three part video series (available below).

Once again I am enjoying pics, etc that are posted! I remember the milkman,Hughie Underwood who delivered milk with his horse and wagon! My grandparents William and Edith Walls lived on the Station Road and I remember the wagon stopping and Mr. Underwood would deliver the milk and the horse and wagon would go on to the next stop! Would anyone have pics that could be posted of Mr. Underwood with his horse and milk wagon?
